College Motto
"Not for self but for country", St.Mary's College has chosen a motto worthy of the high aspiration that foster within its walls. It's on this fundamental basis on the ideal of unselfish service to our country that the structure of education in St.Mary's built. This national enthusiasm underlines all his efforts. All the endeavors of our superiors are concentrated on that noble end of furnishing our dear land with youth who will be true patriots - a worthy example to others of this spirited island.
St.Mary's College is justly proud of her motto, which is placed before us for our inspiration; for actuated by this motive, superiors labour unceasingly to render by their devoted work, a signal service to their devoted work, a signal service to their country of birth or adoption.
We
are not born for ourselves but for our kith and kin for our
family , for our neighbor and for our country
-
Cardinal Newman
What a great proof could be traced to vindicate the truth of our motto? This is our birth place Sri Lanka is our mother land. The mother land claims the citizens' devotion and love. The service of one country is one of the loftiest of virtues and one who is stirred by the motive of serving her will be a worthy patriot dear to God and famous for all ages.
Our college motto once more rings in our ears. St.Mary's has worked for over hundred and thirty five years of this country- the country of our birth. She has produced sons worthy of the noble Morro - men of ability - men of integrity, men of character and above all men of true national spirit. Is not St.Mary's worthy of a corner in the annals of this island? The future of this country in the hands of the younger generation. Remember youth! When you leave school - and enter the world carry with you this noble ideal. Be an example to the society. Do not forget that it is your sacred duty to make the land you love a lovelier place to live in. Bold youth - true sons of St.Mary's. Let your shining example be a guide to enlighten them with the golden rule set by the school. - Nor for self Bur for country.
